Beach House

Just a wet dream of a band as far as Ragged Words are concerned (too graphic? apologies), Baltimore dream pop duo Victoria Legrand - the niece of Oscar winning French film composer Michel Legrand - and Alex Scally formed Beach House in 2005 and released their self-titled debut on Carpark a year later. The album was quickly brought across the ocean by Bella Union a few months later before the divine Devotion was simultaneously released on both side's of the Atlantic in February 2008. The superb non-album single 'Used To Be' followed in late 2008 and the band began to write and record album number three in early '09.

Having topped our writers' albums of the year list last week, it's only right that Beach House should kick off a week where we hand the end-of-year reigns over to the artists who made some of our favourite music of 2010 and ask...

For the most part, Victoria Legrand is the perfect interviewee – courteous, friendly, and happy to answer any question. But when I make the mistake of referring to Beach House as a "buzz band", she bristles audibly, and I fear the conversation may have taken a turn for the worse...

Review of Beach House - Devotion by Beach House

The front cover of Devotion shows Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand, the two members of Beach House, facing each other over a candlelit table. Their heads are bowed in private contemplation, and between them lies a cake with the band name and album title on it.

The title and cover both...

Review of Beach House - Teen Dream by Beach House

Hype can be a terrible thing. Personally, the stir whipped up around Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion and Grizzly Bear’s Veckatimest made them partially unlistenable in 2009. It’s not just because people like those records so much (and talk about them so much), it...

Beach House, Wild Beasts, Pivot, London

Did someone call Beach House underwhelming last week? Not terrifically arresting live, was it? Who, me? Naah. Really? Well in that case Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally, you are owed an apology. The Baltimorian pair were in fact terrifically arresting tonight...

Caught Live: Beach House, London

Sections of the audience are sat on the concrete floor of Cargo’s auditorium as Jana Hunter plucks the opening chords of the night, but soon enough everyone is drawn to stand. Alex Scally – Beach House’s male half – joins Hunter on stage to play bass and guitar, even offering a joke as Hunter...

Last time we spoke to Beach House, they still had day jobs and were feeling the strain of balancing real-life obligations with the workload of aspiring professional musicians.

Just before Christmas, we gave Baltimore dream poppers Beach House the honour of kicking off our Artists' Albums Of 2010...
