Named as a marriage between the film The Squid and The Whale and its director Noah Baumbach, Noah and the Whale formed in 2006 around the songwriting of Charlie Fink. After a number of singles on the Young & Lost label - including the top 5 re-release of Five Years Time - the band released their debut album Peaceful The World Lays Me Down in 2008, itself troubling the top five of the UK's album charts. The album featured Fink's girlfriend and Mercury Prize nominee Laura Marling, who played live with the band and whose album Fink produced before the pair broke up. Subsequently the band's second album, The First Days Of Spring, was perhaps the definitive break-up record of 2009.
