“When I started Sleeping States I gave myself a set of rules because I had a real problem with singer/songwriters. I find the whole thing cheesy beyond belief,” Markland Starkie, the one man maestro behind Sleeping States said about his determined no-strumming/ detune those guitars approach. Damien Rice this is not. After self-releasing the Distances Are Great CDR in 2004, Starkie made his full debut proper with 2007’s staggering There The Open Spaces. Gardens Of The North, Sleeping States first album on Bella Union, followed in August, 2009.

In the first of a new series, Markland Starkie - the one man maestro that is Sleeping States - gives Ragged Words a detailed look into the follow up to 2007's wondrous These The Open Spaces.

This was extremely difficult. I'm still pretty sure I've forgotten at least one hugely important album. But all of the following were either albums that were significant in my life at one time or another, or I ended up listening to a lot over time, or both (in no particular order).

When we speak in early March, Markland Starkie is excited. He has the next weekend off – his first in a long time – and he plans on doing very little, maybe some washing. Such are the small joys of the busy man, one who combines the bill paying day job with freelance film sound...
