Brian King's (Japandroids) albums of the decade
The ORIGINAL version - NOT the re-release that includes Back To School, a scar on an otherwise immaculate track listing that the suits at Maverick will never live down. This album was a quantum leap for the Deftones and nothing short of a masterpiece in a genre that rarely looks this far forward. Why White Pony is not regarded with the same reverence as Loveless or OK Computer is a mystery to me.
Post DIG!, no one takes Anton Newcombe very seriously - except me. Easily one of the most important (and underrated) songwriters our a generation. Case and point: this album.
"Kill All Hippies" - enough said!
A total fucking mess in all the right ways.
Totally unique. A pop gem. The only record that sounds like this is, well, all of Clinic's other records.
If everyone released records like this, the future might just be perfect.
Textbook heart on sleeve. Immeasurable influence on Japandroids.
Textbook crass and sass. Immeasurable influence on Japandroids.
The ultimate 'long walk' record. Every decade needs one.
The only reason this isn't #1 is because it came out last year, and it's power hasn't had enough time to gestate. It is hard to listen to records like this and not feel totally irrelevant. Nick reminds us that he is a man fighting demons, and the rest of us are boys fighting puberty.
