Just when you think they've thrown in the towel...
Keep coming back to this time and time again. Beautiful versions of traditional American folksongs.
About as interesting as an indie record gets, and shafted the major label at the same time. What's not to like?
Right album at the right time.
Pretty much all PJ Harvey albums deserve a mention but this one stand out to me.
Not too many choruses, not much pace, very little variation. My cup of tea.
No one would pay him enough to tour it, so he made a film of putting the show together with Julian Schnabel. The he did tour it. Typical.
Soundtrack to a particularly romantic period to my life. Spent mostly waltzing on my own around the disused 1930's theatre I was living alone in at the time. Large amounts of gin, joining in on the piano, slipping over and hurting my hip quite often.
1999... But not available in the UK until 2000? No true, but anyway... I often get shouted down for favouring the more commercial sounding Pavement album. What can I say, I'm very commercial.
Another cheat, reissued last year, but no list is complete without a touch of the country king. Three of the best songs ever written make it on to this album, along with at least five of the worst.
