Ragged Recommends... Other Lives (Album Sampler + Video)
Fans of sprawling, atmospheric indie will find much to admire in the windswept music of Oklahoma quintet Other Lives. Balancing melancholic minor chords with buoyant, festival tent-singalong choruses, it's not hard to hear why Thom Yorke and Wayne Coyne are already said to be card-carrying fans.
Tamer Animals, the band's second LP – and first to hit The UK and Ireland – will arrive in these parts via [PIAS] at the end of the month. In the meantime, the three-track album sampler below provides the perfect introduction to their widescreen, scorched earth sound. The title track (and new single) finds bandleader Jesse Tabish's plaintive vocal diving headlong into a sea of piano, while the falsetto- and orchestra-laden 'Dark Horse' is what Grizzly Bear might sound like if they spent a month cutting loose in Brian Wilson's studio. The cascading reverb of previous single 'For 12' is now available as a free download from the band's website; the song's accompanying video, meanwhile, presents Tamer Animals' vast-but-lonely dynamic in a quite literal sense, Tabish singing "It feels like forever / When your mind turns to fiction..." as he mans a solo space mission across a dusty, desolate planet.
Other Lives already have several UK festival and headline dates lined up in the weeks ahead to coincide with the album's release. Expect this list to grow and grow as word of mouth – not to mention critical buzz – quickly gathers pace:
