Washed Out Signs To Sub Pop/Domino, Preps Debut LP, Euro Tour
Ariel Pink is now on the books of 4AD, while Neon Indian's Alan Palomo has seemingly become Wayne Coyne's sidekick of late, so I guess it makes some sort of perverse sense that Washed Out (aka 27 year-old Georgia native Ernest Greene) should today be unveiled as Sub Pop's latest signing. Arguably the most melodic proponent of chillwave's loosely-defined sound, Greene should at least be able to hold his own around the SP water cooler with the likes of Beach House, No Age and, errr, Mogwai.
Not that he'll have too much time to stop and chat, mind you, because it's also just been announced that Washed Out's first full-length proper is set to see the light of day (appropriately enough) later this summer, with July 11 having been pencilled in as a tentative street date. The Seattle powerhouse will put out the record Stateside, while European fans will be able to get it through Weird World, the nascent Domino offshoot whose maiden release will be Smith Westerns' rather brill Dye It Blonde LP at the end of this month. Per Sub Pop's blog, the album goes by the name of Within and Without (how bloody chillwave is that?!!) and saw Greene work alongside indie super-producer Ben Allen (Merriweather Post Pavillion, Halcyon Digest) on nine tracks about which not a lot else is known apart from the song titles below.
Will Sub Pop's cash money make Within and Without a rapid departure from the lo-fi aesthetic explored on 2009's Life of Leisure and High Times EPs? Is this the clearest sign yet that chillwave has finally moved out of the bedroom and into the board room? Will Toro Y Moi get signed to Sony?!? Only time (and Hipster Runoff) will truly tell. For now, though, here's the album's tracklisting:
Washed Out: Within and Without (11.07.11)
1. Eyes Be Closed
2. Echoes
3. Amor Fati
4. Soft
5. Far Away
6. Before
7. You and I
8. Within and Without
9. A Dedication
UPDATE: It's been a busy day for Mr. Greene. Not only does he have a new record to brag about – and two new labels to call home – but it turns out he and his newly-formed band (which may include his wife Blair, but probably won't include members of Small Black, with whom he toured last year) will be riding the chillwaves across The Atlantic for a first set of European tour dates to coincide with the LP's release. The following UK dates have so far been confirmed:
July 15 @ Lovebox Weekender, London
August 8 @ Deaf Institute, Manchester
August 9 @ Scala, London
